Jonathan Armstead, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, union worker, and friend, passed away peacefully at his home in Easton, PA, on October 12, 2024, at the age of 91. Born on August 31, 1933, in Hurricane, AL, Jonathan was the beloved son of Jesse and Equilla Sledge Armstead.Jonathan spent much of his life in service to his faith and community. A former resident of Lake Butler, FL, he later moved to Monticello, New York, where he joined his siblings,Ceola and David Armstead. Jonathan became a longtime member of King’s Chapel Mission of Monticello, where he served faithfully as the Head Deacon under the leadership of the late District Elder Jesse Wrenn. Known for his warm and cheerful spirit,Jonathan later served as the church’s Head Chef, preparing meals for church fellowships with care and generosity, and known among the church affectionately as “Brother Joe.”Jonathan married the love of his life, Anita, with whom he shared 32 years of loving matrimony. Their bond was rooted in faith and loving companionship, as they found joy in life’s simple pleasures such as spending time together, cooking, traveling, discussing
current events, and reflecting on the blessings of their years together. Their marital partnership was an embodiment of God’s love, grace, kindness, and light. When he moved to the Lehigh Valley, Jonathan became an active member of Holy Bethel Pentecostal Church in Bethlehem, PA, where he continued his faithful service under the leadership of Bishop Ernest Fuller and Pastor Joseph Gray.
In addition to his devotion to his faith, Jonathan was a proud 70-year member of the Laborers’ International Union of North America Local 17 in New York. Known to his colleagues as “Easy Money,” Jonathan was highly respected for his work ethic and dedication to to his coworkers and his trade. Jonathan is survived by his loving wife, Anita Armstead; his daughter, Cynthia Armstead Booth of Monticello, NY; his sons, Jonathan Armstead, Jr. of Monticello, NY, Michael Armstead of Brooklyn Park, MN; his stepson, Dr. Chris Hunt (Lynette) of Bethlehem, PA; and his brothers, Robert Lee Armstead and Howard Armstead, both of Cocoa, FL. He is also survived by his grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and a host of relatives, friends, and his King’s Chapel Mission and Holy Bethel church families, who will cherish his memory.
Funeral Services will take place on Thursday October 24, 2024 at 11AM in Holy Bethel Pentecostal Church. Viewing begins at 10AM.
